At the age of five, Lhoppön Rechung entered the
monastery of Palyul Chö Khor Ling. There he trained until the age of
fourteen under Lama Chöying Gyamtso, a Kagyu lama. From age fourteen to eighteen he studied at the Sakya
Dzongsar Institute under Khenpo Kunga Wangchuk. Following that he spent
two years at the Gelug Drepung University.
At the age of twenty he entered the Nyingmapa Namdröling Shedra, where he studied for nine years. Upon completion of his studies, H.H. Penor Rinpoche bestowed upon him the title of Lhoppön, and sent him to teach at H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche’s Shedra in Bodanath, Nepal. Every year, since the age of twelve, he completed an annual two-month retreat held during the school breaks.
In 2001 he was invited by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche to come to America to teach. At the request of the Venerable Gyatrul Rinpoche, he visited at the Tashi Chöling Retreat Center in Ashland, Oregon, where he taught the tummo tsalung practice (the practice of generating the mystic heat) according to the tradition of the Nam Chö of Tertön Migyur Dorje.
At the request of Tulku Nyima Gyaltsen Rinpoche, Lhoppon Rechung has been traveling to Maryland to teach at Sakya Dhoko Choling center, to support Tulku Nyima Rinpoche's students. Lhoppon Rechung has taught in various places over the years: Washington, D.C.; Alabama; Gig Harbor, WA; San Francisco Bay area; Fargo, ND; Boulder, CO.
Presently Lhoppon Rechung is established in Boulder, Colorado, where for the past several years he has worked to establish and stabilize Mipham Shedra as a center for study and practice. Monthly he leads Bardo Practices, as well as offers Meditation Instruction for students of all levels of study and experience. Students may also study and accumulate Ngondro practices under Lhoppon Rechung.
Many students have studied the Tibetan Language under Lhoppon Rechung, both at Naropa University and privately at Mipham Shedra.
